I Am Back to Blogging!!!!

Happy November to Everyone.  It has been a while and so much has happened in Grade One.

The Wonderful Ones are now reading for 9 minutes during Daily Five.  This allows me this time to work uninterrupted with a small group.  We talk about strategies for gaining understanding when reading.

One strategy for understanding or comprehension is to use your Schema.
Schema is relevant background knowledge, prior knowledge, or just plain experience.  When students make connections to the text they are reading, their comprehension increases. Good readers constantly try to make sense out of what they read by seeing how it fits with what they already know. When we help students make those connections before, during, and after they read, we are teaching them a critical comprehension strategy that the best readers use almost unconsciously.

We made schema posters.  You can practice using this strategy at home.  Before reading, look at the cover and the pictures in the book and discuss what you already know about the story or the subject of the book.

For example;

  • Is the book fiction or informational.
  • Can you predict or guess what is going to happen or words that might show up in the book.
While reading, discuss connections that you can make to the book.
  •  Does it remind you of something you have seen or done?
  • Does it remind you of another book?
When you have finished the book, discuss the events or facts in the book.
  • Did you learn something new?
  • What was main idea of the book/story?
